Abstract

This article investigates the relationship of Bronze Age hoards and settlements in the Carpathian Basin based on new research into the context of the hoard from Hajdúböszörmény, Hungary. Detector-based studies in recent years have led to the discovery of more than thirty new hoards in the region, whose archaeologically documented positions and diagnostics are presented here. Metal depositions are shown to strongly correlate with settlements. In particular, repeated deposition in fortified hilltop settlements was apparently a regular occurrence. The depositions happened in scattered fashion over both the settlement area and certain other limited areas. Depositions directly correlated with individual buildings, on the other hand, are rare.
