Abstract

This paper introduces the term “Archäologisches Revier” as a new category to analyze aspects of the sociology of archaeological knowledge and science, especially individual knowledge spaces and the territoriality of scientists. The History of German Archaeology currently lacks terms and categories to analyze present works as well as past research regarding its territorial dimension and as opposed to collective, institutionalized knowledge spaces. Debates from the Oberlausitz Region at the very beginning of the institutionalization of Pre- and Early History as a scientific field will be used as examples for noticeable effects of territorial behavior on discussions and practice of archaeologists and archaeological institutions. To describe such territorial behavior and its effects, the term “Archäologisches Revier” is instrumental.
