Eftychia Rompoti’s research project examines early Greek painting on Pinakes from the late geometric until the early classical period. This project aims to investigate the painting on Pinakes considering the resemblances to but also the differences from vase painting as well as the medium “Pinax” as such within a specific social context, regarding the fact that the function of images is related not least to their use.
Research
The study of early Greek Painting has been mainly focused on vase painting. Vases are the most numerous image-bearing remains of the time. But there were also other media bearing images, like clay or wooden plaques. Pinakes have mostly been studied as a subcategory of vase painting. This project aims to investigate the painting on Pinakes considering the resemblances to but also the differences from vase painting as well as the medium “Pinax” as such within a specific social context, regarding the fact that the function of images is related not least to their use. At the same time the structure of the visual system is to be studied with regard to the use of formal elements that constitute the conventions of representing space, the compositional organization and the composition’s conceptual principle in a pre-perspective visual system.
