This project investigated the changing relationship between the tetrarchic palace of Felix Romuliana near Gamzigrad in Eastern Serbia and its immediate hinterland over time, with a particular focus on developments during periods of socio-political in-/stability in the region.
Research
As part of the Excellence Cluster Topoi, the tetrarchic palace of Felix Romuliana and its hinterland were studied in the course of two PhD projects, and through excavations and large scale geophysical surveys carried out by the Serbian Archaeological Institute in Belgrade and the German Archaeological Institute (DAI). This project drew together all data gathered to date in a single interface, in order to assess the development of the central palatial site and its surroundings – and the interrelationship between the two – over time, ranging from prehistoric periods to the Early Medieval. In this, a particular focus lied on the identification of stable and instable periods in socio-political and economic terms, in order to investigate how these affected the development and interdependence of the core site and its periphery.
