This research group followed the development of the methodological fundamentals of historical geography and the elaboration of new work techniques. Accordingly, one sub-project dealt with the comprehensive digitalisation of Berlin thesauri for ancient Near Eastern languages, i.e. text corpora which has been thereby made accessible for other Topoi projects (e.g. for linguistic analyses of ancient Near Eastern languages or the development of an atlas of the ancient Near East). Another sub-project of central importance in B-IV was the so-called “Place-Name Project”. The goal of this project was to bring together the multitude of web-based IT systems for the compilation and localization of historical Near Eastern place names into a worldwide network, and to apply digital modelling methods to the development of a reconstruction of Hittite geography.
