In the Egyptian Netherworld Books from the 2nd half of the 2nd millennium BCE, we find a comparatively stringent system of cryptographic encodings of Egyptian hieroglyphic texts. The talk will introduce some of the principles underlying the plaintext > code conversions, focusing on the question in how far the iconic shapes of the related hieroglyphs are relevant.
