In the present paper I shall examine the ethical rules addressed to ancient obstetricians as they are described in some Greek and Latin gynaecological texts of the Early Imperial Time. These rules provide us with an ideal picture of the obstetrician, which I will analyse in comparison with the ideal portrait of ancient physicians. I shall devote particular attention to the incipit of Soranus’ Gynaecology and to other passages taken from different works by Galen.
